Throwback Thursday – June 23, 2016

It’s time to go back. Back to… last Thursday, so I can pay my phone bill on time.

In all seriousness, it’s time for another Throwback Thursday! Anyone who’s trawled through Molten Core, in the heart of Blackrock Mountain, will have noticed reputation gains with the Hydraxian Waterlords. “Who are these people?” you might have wondered, before gleefully slaughtering yet another helpless elemental. You would also have seen the burning runes near each boss. Well, wonder no more!

Back in the heady days of Vanilla WoW, as well as The Burning Crusade, this was a faction of water elementals, led by Duke Hydraxis, who were directly opposed to Ragnaros and his fiery minions. At level 57, the Duke would offer Poisoned Water, to purify some water elemental scouts in the Eastern Plaguelands, and Stormers and Rumblers to kill elemental mobs in Silithus’ Crystal vale. At level 60, he would offer Eye of the Emberseer to obtain Eye of the Emberseer from Pyroguard Emberseer, the first boss in pre-Warlords Upper Blackrock Spire.

Once the player had reached Friendly standing, the Duke would give The Molten Core, which entailed the player killing a few mobs in the Molten Core*, and Agent of Hydraxis, requiring Honored reputation to complete.

* Reaching the entrance to the Molten Core was made much easier by completing Attunement to the Core, which involved a run through almost the entirety of Blackrock Depths to retrieve the quest objective. After completion, players talked to Lothos Riftwaker to teleport directly into the raid instance.

When Honored was reached, the player was then given Hands of the Enemy, requiring the return of the hands from four of the Molten Core bosses to the Duke. This would reward one of two rings, either Ocean’s Breeze or Tidal Loop, from Hydraxis’ Coffer.

At Revered, the Duke granted the Eternal Quintessence, a non-consumable version of the Aqual Quintessence, used to quench the burning runes near the first seven bosses in the Molten Core, necessary to summon Majordomo Executus. Obtaining the latter would grant the Feat of StrengthThe Fifth Element.

Patch 3.0.8 removed Poisoned Water, rendering the rest of the quest chain unobtainable. However, if it had been completed before, or was in the player’s quest log, then the quests were still available.Cataclysm completely removed all Hydraxian Waterlords quests, leaving only the phantom rep grind behind as their legacy.

The Hydraxian Waterlords Today

Reputation is gained from killing the elementals in Crystal Vale (up to 5,999/6,000 Friendly), and all mobs/bosses in the Molten Core (up to 11,999/12,000 Honored). At this point, only the raid bosses will grant reputation. At Exalted, only Golemagg the Incinerator and Ragnaros will get the player to 999/1000 Exalted.

This rep grind, which will take several months, is required to complete Raid Representation. As a side benefit, by the time you get to Exalted, you might well have picked up all pieces for your class’ Tier 1 raid set.
