Alliance Vanguard and Horde Expedition

In Wrath of the Lich King, when both Horde and Alliance forces moved upon the frosty continent of Northrend to fight the forces of the Lich King (among other things), adventurers found themselves working for two new factions: the Alliance Vanguard and the Horde Expedition. Each has a main base on both sides of Northrend: Valiance Keep (A) and Warsong Hold (H) in Borean Tundra, and Valgarde (A) and Vengeance Landing (H) in Howling Fjord.

These are umbrella organisations, however. Each has four subfactions associated with it:

Alliance Vanguard

  • Explorer’s League
  • Frostborn
  • Silver Covenant
  • Valiance Expedition

Horde Expedition

  • Hand of Vengeance
  • Sunreavers
  • Taunka
  • Warsong Offensive

When earning reputation with the two factions, half of the amount earned overflows into the subfactions as well. The reverse also occurs; earning reputation with a subfaction awards half of the amount gained to the parent faction.

The primary source of reputation gain is via questing throughout Northrend, but some dungeons will also give reputation, either to an associated subfaction, or to the parent faction. This assumes that the player is not wearing a championing tabard.

There are no quartermasters for the subfactions, aside from the Silver Covenant and the Sunreavers, both of which are based at the Argent Tournament Ground*. The Vanguard and Offensive factions do have quartermasters:

The primary reason for getting to Exalted with either faction is to obtain Schematic: Mekgineer’s Chopper (A)/Schematic: Mechano-Hog(H). The mounts are somewhat costly in gold and time to make, requiring a hefty amount of titanium, and an expensive item from a goblin in K3. However, the mount can be sold for a reasonable profit.

Running the Icecrown Citadel dungeons — the Forge of Souls, the Pit of Saron and the Halls of Reflection — is a good way to earn reputation, and may also have the rare Battered Hilt (A)/Battered Hilt (H) drop.

* See the article on the Argent Tournament for more details about their pet/mount rewards.
