Postcards from Azeroth – To Argus: Ahn’Qiraj

Ahn’Qiraj

Ahn’Qiraj: The Fallen Kingdom is a zone in the extreme southwestern corner of Kalimdor. Originally it was technically part of Silithus, but inaccessible until Patch 1.9, when the famed event known as the Opening of the Gates of Ahn’Qiraj took place, unleashing the qiraji hordes upon the unsuspecting world. This was the culmination of a truly epic quest chain, where almost an entire server of players pooled resources to allow one lucky person to ring the Scarab Gong, breaking the enchantment that held the qiraji in check since the War of the Shifting Sands. Those had obtained the Scepter of the Shifting Sands could, for a few hours, be granted the title ‘Scarab Lord’, and obtain the legendary Black Qiraji Battle Tank once they rang the gong after the Gates were opened. Sadly, the quest chain to obtain the Scepter was removed with the launch of the Cataclysm expansion.

There are two instances here, the Ruins of Ahn’Qiraj (originally a 20-man raid, but now 10-man) and the Temple of Ahn’Qiraj (40-man raid). At launch, the end boss of the Temple, the Old God C’thun, was fantastically difficult to down, with it having a novel way to wipe everyone — chain lightning that bounced to every player, increasing the damage dealt until the last person received several million points of damage. This, at a time when health pools topped out at around 20K.

Four mounts can be obtained from the Temple, the BlueYellowGreen and Red Qiraji Battle Tanks. These mounts are usable only within the Ahn’Qiraj instances. Obtaining the red one will award the Feat of Strength Why? Because it’s Red.

Several pets drop in the Temple, including the very useful Anubisath Idol from one of the Twin Emperors.

Running both raids is an excellent way to earn reputation with the Cenarion Circle and the Brood of Nozdormu. Reputation with both factions is required to obtain the Ahn’Qiraj transmog sets, with the quests to obtain the pieces located outside the Ruins entrance, and just inside the Temple after its first boss.

Notably, pieces of the Glorious and Exalted plate sets are rare drops here, with certain pieces fetching hundreds of thousands of gold on the auction house.

Postcard image: Argus looms over Ahn’Qiraj, adding its sinister gaze to an already forbidding place.
