Honestly, I am guilty of both. Mainly though, I usually find myself doing random tasks, old achievements or world quests and then there one is... a beautiful creature I have not seen before. I check my logs, I check my add-ons and it's true... I think can this be happening?!?! After a moment of disbelief I panic and give my pets a swift pep talk and tell them we need to take it easy as we are going to adopt this new creature to our family. After caging the creature I check my inventory and dance around in celebration (both IG and IRL).

Currently, I only do wild battles when I'm out for that purpose. In the past, when I had a lot of gaps, I couldn't resist stopping constantly.

Neither, really. If I see a pet I haven't yet collected, I'll likely stop and try to capture it. I usually don't go out specifically to do battles except for the world quests, though. Occasionally if I'm feeling in the mood I'll attempt a trainer when I'm passing through older zones.

In MoP I was battling everything I came across. I got distracted from my tasks very, very easily.
Now that I have quite a collection I'll go out and hunt specifically for pets I need.
In the case of a certain bird in Azsuna I had alts parked in the spot across a few servers. This was prior to the Falcosaur boost.

I usually just stop as I am out adventuring... I feel like it's sort of like multitasking, so I don't have to go through the same area twice.

Most of my pets are rares and leveled fully so I don't specifically look for pet battles unless it it an pet I don't already have or a second rare Unborn Valkarie.

I do a mix. It depends on how much time I have to play and if I'm playing by myself or grouped with somebody.

It depends. When I am leveling a character solo, I simultaneously level pets; I alternate pet battling with questing. But I usually play paired up with my husband, and while he doesn't mind killing endless mobs for quest drops while I pet battle, I try to keep my side jaunts to a minimum.

When I'm actively working on a safari achievement I will make many side trips, and will keep doing so until I find the perfect breed pet. I had to quest with my pet tracker off at the start of this expansion so I couldn't see the pets while I was questing with my husband.

I only stop when I see a pet fight if I'm collecting a certain pet. While I was trying to get all the pets for the Legion Tamer, I would stop for just about every fight. If it's a pet battle weekend, then I will also stop for every fight to get the experience.

I try to do them as i go questing. Though if i am questing with my husband i try not to much because sometimes he gets bored waiting for me. But when i'm by myself i will try to do as much as i can. i usually stop to see if i find a rare. There have been times i go out just to battle and just end up questing.

Non-Entry Post
If I'm still needing stuff, I stop and check. Stuff could be pet, quality, or breed related. If I know someone is on or around that still needs stuff, I stop and check. Otherwise, I try not to harass the wildlife.

I go back and forth. I am more likely to go questing and stop at every available pet battle than to go out specifically for battling, but there are times when I have to tear myself away and say, "No, you have a limited time to get these quests done and you can't pet battle right now," and there are also times (usually during pet bonus xp week) where I will go out just to pet battle, leveling pets and farming for rares I don't have yet at the same time.
